Speaking

Ten minutes taught me
what two months are for.

Erbil, December 202452minutes on stage, starting at 11:28.

At thirteen, somebody put three printed pages in my hand in a community hall and gave me ten minutes before I was due to stand up.

I stuttered. I held back the tears until it was over. Then I ran.

Thirty-odd years later, I opened a keynote for Toyota and Lexus in Erbil with Ohayo gozaimasu. The research folder for that talk started two months before I landed.

Same person. The difference was preparation.

How I prepare

It starts with your audience.

Preparation starts the moment a booking is confirmed. And it starts with the audience.

Before I write a single slide, you get four pages of questions from me. How many people. Which countries. What they do all day. Who will introduce me. Which speakers you brought in before, and what your people said about them afterward. What keeps them awake at night. And one question most people never think to ask: is attending voluntary or mandatory?

Then I arrive the night before, meet your audio and video team, and check the sound, the screens and the slides. Then I check them again after breakfast.

None of it is complicated. Most speakers simply do not do it.

Keynotes

Four talks. One question.
